New York alleges TikTok gave teens, children a placebo safety feature instead of a real one

New York’s lawsuit against the company is one of more than two dozen cases brought by states accusing the social media giant of designing its platform to encourage addict…

Our take

These are allegations, not findings, but they go to the heart of something creators rely on: that platform controls do what the button says. If, as New York alleges according to Reuters reporting cited by TechCrunch, some teens switched on "Algo Refresh" and got a feed that didn't change, it's fair to wonder what else is being quietly tested. TikTok told Reuters it regularly tests features, like most companies.

For creators with young audiences, the bigger story may be the more than two dozen state cases TechCrunch counts. Pressure on that scale could lead to changes in how teen feeds and recommendations work, which could shift who sees your videos. Worth watching, and another reason not to build your whole business on one feed.

Pinterest expands creator content promotions

Brands will be able to sponsor creator Pins, boosting exposure and providing more promotional opportunities.

Our take

If you post on Pinterest, this could become another line in your brand deals. According to Social Media Today, brands will be able to sponsor creator Pins, which should mean more exposure for your work and more promotional opportunities. If Pinterest has been an afterthought for your channel, it may be worth a second look.

The report leaves out the details that matter most. It doesn't say who sets the terms, whether creators earn more when a brand boosts their Pin, or what happens to usage rights. Before you sign anything, ask how long the promotion runs, what the brand can do with your content and whether the fee reflects the extra reach. Exposure is nice. It doesn't pay the rent.

All that said, it's nice when something on social media is just pleasant rather than dividing people, and I'm here for that. This is celebrating something. More of that, please.
