This policy explains what personal information The Tube collects when you use thetube.news, why, and what you can do about it.

The Tube is published by Agile451 Ltd, a company incorporated in England and Wales (company number 12429555), registered office The Embassy, 389 Newport Road, Cardiff, CF24 1TP. Agile451 Ltd is the data controller for the information described here. For anything privacy-related, email [email protected] or use our contact form.

What we collect

  • Newsletter sign-ups. If you subscribe to The Daily Upload, we collect your email address and where on the site you signed up.
  • Accounts. If you create an account, we collect your email address, username, password (stored only in hashed form) and anything you choose to add to your profile.
  • Messages and tips. If you contact us or send a tip, we collect your name, email address and what you write.
  • Technical data. Like most websites, our servers record basic request information (such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested) to keep the site secure and running. We also use your IP address to limit repeated sign-up attempts.

We don’t use advertising trackers, we don’t currently use analytics, and we don’t sell your personal information.

To show which stories are most read, your browser tells us when you have spent 15 seconds reading an article. We store only a count per article per day: no cookies, no IP address, nothing that identifies you or links one visit to another.

Why we use it

  • To send you the newsletter you asked for, based on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing from any issue.
  • To run your account and let you sign in, because you asked us to (performance of a contract).
  • To reply to your messages and follow up on tips (our legitimate interest in running a newsroom).
  • To keep the site secure and prevent abuse (our legitimate interest).

Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers who process data on our behalf, under contract:

  • UKHost4u, which hosts the site and its database in the United Kingdom.
  • Cloudflare, which delivers and protects the site, so every visit passes through its network, and which forwards email sent to our thetube.news addresses.
  • Quonzy, our email platform, which stores newsletter subscribers and sends The Daily Upload using Amazon Web Services.
  • Google Fonts, which serves the typefaces on our pages; your browser requests them from Google, which receives your IP address.
  • YouTube, for videos embedded in some articles. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode, which doesn’t set cookies until you play a video.

Some of these providers may process data outside the UK, including in the United States. Where they do, the transfer is covered by UK adequacy arrangements (such as the UK–US data bridge) or by standard contractual clauses with the UK addendum. We may also disclose information where the law requires it.

Cookies and local storage

If you sign in, we set one essential cookie to keep you signed in. If you choose light or dark mode, your browser remembers that choice in its own local storage; it never leaves your device. While a tab is open, it also notes which articles it has already counted (session storage, cleared when you close the tab), so a reread isn’t counted twice. We don’t use analytics or advertising cookies. If that changes, we’ll update this page and ask for your consent first.

How long we keep it

Newsletter subscribers are kept until you unsubscribe. Accounts are kept until you ask us to delete them. Messages and tips are kept for as long as we need them to deal with your enquiry or story. Server logs are kept for a limited period for security, then deleted.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct, delete or export your personal information, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, email [email protected]. If you’re unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top of this page.
