Google’s SynthID AI Detector is Now Freely Available to Everyone

Google has made its SynthID Detector publicly available, allowing users to check whether images, videos, and audio clips contain watermarks associated with generative AI.…

Our take

This cuts both ways for creators. You can check a viral clip before you react to it, and anyone can check yours. PetaPixel, citing CNET, reports that an iPhone photo adjusted with Apple's Reframe tool was flagged as carrying a SynthID watermark. So a light AI edit may be enough to get your work labelled. It's worth knowing which of your tools add one.

The bigger catch is that a clean result proves very little. The detector only finds watermarks that compatible tools added in the first place, so plenty of AI content will sail through. Treat it as one check, not a verdict. Uploading unreleased work? PetaPixel reports that files are deleted once results appear, but a signature linked to your identifier is kept for 24 hours.

Also, I feel this is a bit performative. AI is here to stay, whether we like it or not. It's early days and it's all going to change. Tools like this exist because there's so much objection to AI, which is justified and fair, to be clear. But they're there to placate people. They don't really change anything. That's just my take.
